Pathetic Photos: Lagos Life on the water front

I am so short of words. In a country where many politician launders public funds to their offshore accounts, in a country where a common local government councilor can afford to buy a Murano Jeep for his concubine and lavish luxurious spendings on their numerous girlfriends, a country which ironically flows with milk and honey; truly the rich gets richer and the poor gets screwed  #StonePoliticians

Prostate Cancer Kills 14 Nigerian Men Daily, Says Expert

Prostate cancer kills 14 men everyday in Nigeria, Dr Abia Nzelu, Coordinator, National Cancer Prevention Programme (NCPP), Lagos State branch, has said.
Nzelu, who said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday, noted that the figure was based on studies.
She said that most men report their cancer cases late when the symptoms had already manifested and attributed the situation to ignorance.
According to her, people die unnecessarily, even when they are diagnosed because there are no facilities to treat them.
“Prostate cancer, the second commonest cancer in men, kills 14 men in Nigeria every day. This is not acceptable because it can be prevented.
“India has over 120 comprehensive cancer centres and we don’t have even one centre that has everything to take care of any kind of cancer that can carry out world class research.
“We need something like this in our own country, because apart from the fact that those that have, can afford it and travel, what of those that cannot?
“In Nigeria, cancer is like a death sentence that is why most deaths here are unnecessary; they are untimely.
“When we had the Dana crash, we were all shouting, but each day people are dying of cancer. Because, they are dying silently, we are not doing anything about it.”
Nzelu said that the prevention should be through life style modification, screening and routine checkups, at least once a year for those who are 40 and above.
She said that regular exercise, losing weight and imbibing the culture of health maintenance could reduce the risk by 50 per cent.
She advocated the establishment of cancer centres in each of the six-geo-political zones, adding that such centres could be built through self-help projects rather than waiting for government.
“The only way to go about it is to get our own comprehensive cancer centres and we cannot wait for government to get them.
“And so the Nigerian Communications Commission has created a platform through which everybody, irrespective of economic status, can contribute, can save own life and save the lives of other people.
“By just contributing N100; by texting ‘Cancer‘to 44777; we will be able to achieve this; we will be able to build these cancer centres in the six geo-political zones.
“We will be able to have it at affordable rate for the poor people. Nigerians should join hands together so that we will achieve this great and noble venture.
“Because together it is possible, that was the theme of this year‘s cancer day.”

Ajimobi’s wife denies money laundering arrest in London

Wife of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, Florence, has denied reports of her arrest by the Metropolitan Police in London.
Speaking with journalists in a telephone interview on Tuesday, the governor’s wife described the news of her arrest as the handiwork of the opposition trying to discredit the Ajimobi-led administration in the state.
An evening newspaper had, on Tuesday in its online version, published a report entitled ‘Anxiety over Florence Ajimobi’s alleged arrest in UK.’ An online agency, Newsleak, also claimed that the wife of the governor had been arrested in London for money laundering.
Asked if she was invited by the police since her arrival in London, she said, “No, not at all. I came back with my daughter on Sunday. Now, I am getting ready to come back home. I have not been invited by the police and I don’t know what all this is about.”
On the reason for her latest trip abroad, she said she took her 14-year-old daughter back to school after her holiday.
She said, “I have a 14-year-old daughter who has been here since 2007. She came to Nigeria for two weeks; we left Nigeria on Sunday morning. That is my mission here.
“I read the report here in England. I was shocked. I read it but there is no iota of truth in everything they wrote. I’m sure it is the work of the  opposition and I am surprised that some people can descend so low to write falsehood.
“I am expected back in the country tomorrow (today) morning.”
Asked to confirm the allegation that she had since the inception of the administration travelled for 52 times, she simply said, “It then means I am not living in Nigeria. Maybe, when I travel back, I will show you my passport to count how many times I have travelled.
“I want you to deal with facts. If you look at my passport since 2007 and compare the way I travelled then with the way I travel now, you will discover that I travel less now.
“My daughter is complaining that I am not regular here. I make her come to Nigeria more because I can’t afford to spend 10 days or more over here.”
Meanwhile, the governor has instituted a N1bn suit against the Independent Communications Network Limited, publishers of PM News for the report.
One of the governor’s aide, who preferred anonymity, said, “So far the governor has spent 68 weeks. How do you reconcile the claim that the First Lady has travelled 52 times since the inception of this administration? Does it mean that she travels every week?”

Heavy security over Fayose planned meeting in Ekiti

There was tension in Ilawe-Ekiti on Tuesday following the announcement that former state Governor Ayo Fayose was scheduled to hold a meeting with some members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the town at 2pm.
Tight security was mounted by policemen and officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
About 12 police vans, loaded with armed policemen were seen at the main entry point to the town. Some policemen were strategically positioned on one side of the road while some youths  took control at the other side.
Sources  close to Fayose told journalists, who were present in the town, that the former governor was still considering whether to attend the meeting or not as at 4pm.
The source said Fayose  had sought the protection of the operatives of State Security Service when he learnt that some youths had laid ambush for him along the road leading to the town.
However, an aide to the former governor told the journalists, “Oga has gone back to Afao (his home town) because of the threats to his life.”
Around 4.30pm, some miscreants made bonfires on the road.
The Director-General of Ayo Fayose Campaign Organisation, Mr. Gboyega Oguntuase, told our correspondent on the telephone that Fayose was in Ilawe for the meeting.
He, however, did not say who the former governor met with or where he held the meeting.
Oguntuase restated the accusation he leveled against  the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria.
He said the party was  behind the threats to the lives of Fayose and other PDP members.
He said the Federal Government might be forced to declare emergency rule in the state if the crisis degenerated into complete breakdown of law and order.
ACN’s spokesperson in the state, Chief Tai Oguntayo, denied AFCO’s allegation. He said,  “Fayose is just afraid of his shadow.”
Oguntayo said ACN was a party known for its respect for rule of law and that members of the party were not miscreants and did not believe in violence.

Finally, Venus and Serena Williams Land in Lagos

History was made again in Lagos on Tuesday as one of the Williams’ sisters and tennis icon, Venus Williams, finally arrived in Lagos, as widely reported in the local and international media.
Venus, the older of the two world's renowned tennis icons, arrived in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital about 3:35pm, aboard a Delta Airline flight. She was welcomed to the hands of officials of Connect Marketing Services Ltd and scores of journalists, who had waited anxiously outside of the arrival lounge of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja.

Her sister, Serena, who has just clinched the WTA title which just ended in Istanbul, Turkey, arrived in Lagos at 9pm local time, on Tuesday.
From the airport, Venus was led straight to a waiting convoy of vehicles and driven to Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island where another group of Journalists had also assembled to receive the tennis queen.
Looking visibly excited about her coming to Lagos, she was accompanied by her managers, who however, did not allow her to entertain any questions from the journalists saying, Venus and Serena will speak to the media elaborately on the purpose of their visit during a Media Conference scheduled to hold on Wednesday 31, October 2012 in Lagos.
Both Serena and Venus Williams are in Lagos as part of the Nigerian leg of a planned tour of two African countries, namely Nigeria and South Africa.
They are here on the platform of Breaking The Mould (BTM) campaign, a women's empowerment programme put together by Octagon and its West Africa affiliate, Connect Marketing Services Ltd.
While in Lagos, they will participate in a number of supporting initiatives such as a tennis clinic, school visit, exhibition match and gala dinner among others.
Through these initiatives, they will be motivating, inspiring and mentoring diverse audiences in particular women and young persons as well as other categories of people to be the best they can be, regardless of obstacles on their way.
Serena and Venus Williams are considered fit as “Mould Breakers” as the story of their lives exemplifies how determination, passion, hard work and self-belief can turn dreams into reality, despite obstacles.

Ripples of Hurricane Sandy may hit Lagos within a week - Govt

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday warned residents of the state to prepare for the ripple effect of Hurricane Sandy in the state.
The Commissioner for Waterfront Development and Infrastructure, Mr. Adesegun Oniru, said the government was projecting that within seven to 14 days, the state would experience the ripple effect of the hurricane in its coast lines.

He explained that the government based its projection on, “experience, records and study of past happenings” and had started taking precautionary measures.
Oniru said, “This warning is not to cause panic in Lagos, but to place us all on alert that if we notice anything unusual in our coast lines, we should not go near the waters but rather call government attention.
“This storm has hit the Caribbean and is now in USA. We always get a ripple effect of such happening in Lagos.
“This wind started in Africa, went west gathering more wind and later turning to hurricane. We expect a splash back effect. It could be on our coast lines and shore lines, it could be more than that. And it may not happen at all. Everybody must be vigilant. Let us be careful around our oceans and lagoons.”
The commissioner said the government was planning to protect Kuramo, Oniru, Majidun, Alpha beach and other areas affected by the last ocean surge in the state.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on the Environment, Dr. Taofeek Folami, urged the residents of the state to avoid flooding effect of the storm by refraining from dumping their refuse into drainage channels.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, urged the  state residents not to  panic, saying the alert was for them to know what to do to prepare for such occurence.

St Janet denies catching her husband in bed with her daughter

Some of you must have read on some blogs a few weeks back that lewd singer St Janet ended her marriage after catching her husband, Kaode Iyun, in bed with her 16 year old daughter from another relationship. The report claimed that the singer had moved out of her matrimonial home and was now living in a hotel. St Janet has responded to the story and says it's all lies. What she said below...

When I read the story I was shocked. I don't know where it came from. Nothing of such happened to me or anybody I know. My marriage is not perfect but it's intact. There's no issue of my husband sleeping with my daughter. I don't even have a 16 year old daughter. I have younger sisters who live with me, but nothing of such ever happened. I strongly believe my detractors are at work. I am strongly investigating where the story came from. It it targeted towards my career and they felt the best way they could go about it is to go about spreading false tales about my personal life.

Kaduna: Bomber targeted to kill over 1000 – Yakowa

Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State ,yesterday, said the aim of the suicide bomber that blew off himself and killed eight worshippers at St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Badarwa, Kaduna last Sunday was to kill the entire 1000-plus worshippers attending mass that day.
The governor, who returned from a one-week holiday, Sunday evening, took a tour of the bombed church and visited the injured taking treatment in five different hospitals, saying government will foot their bills and “assist” owners of  affected property near the church.
Normalcy returns
Meanwhile, normal activities have resumed in the town with schools, markets, shops, and all public offices opened. But, a convoy of armed soldiers patrol the major streets of Kaduna to establish their presence.

Speaking at a press conference, yesterday, after what he said was a five-hour tour  to see for himself what happened, Yakowa said:  “I have gone to the affected church, and I have visited all the injured patients and I am deeply saddened by what happened, but I thank God, because it could have been worse.
“I met the officiating Priest  during the Mass Service. His name is Rev. Father Mike Bunni. He was able to tell me that the bomber was very determined to kill all the over 1000 worshippers in the church. And you could  see how daring he was. He did not go through the gate. He drove straight against the fenced wall of the church.
“The Priest said if the fence of the church was not strong, he could have driven through the walls of the church and detonated the bomb there. But the bomb went off just outside the  door of the church and brought it down. That was why the casualties were not that much. Four were killed. That was what I was told. About 100 were injured.  So, you see, we have to thank God for his infinite grace, because the situation could have been worse.

“I was at the 44 Army Referral Hospital, St Gerard Hospital, Garkuwa Hospital Barau Dikko and Multi-Clinic Hospitals. I want to say that though they are in various degrees of pain, they are all in high spirits. I spoke to them, and they all said it was an act of God.
No amount of terror will frustrate me from worshipping Christ —Priest
“The Priest told me that no amount of terror will frustrate him from worshiping Christ, and that terror cannot dictate how we worship God.
“I want to use this opportunity to also say that no amount of wickedness of terrorism will deter us from pursuing our agenda of peace, development and security. The few evil ones in this state cannot frustrate the state.
“All the victims will be treated at the expense of the state government, and I have assured all the Medical Directors of these hospitals. We will also assist the owners of the damaged property near the church. And this means that we have to spend on what we have not planned for.”
He then thanked all that came out to assist the victims and praised Christian youths for not going into reprisal attacks.
The Deputy Speaker, Kaduna House of Assembly, Dr. Dogara Matto, spoke at the press conference and said the House was ready to pass into law under 24-hours any law that would improve peace and security in the state.
The Catholic Archbishop of Kaduna, Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, also addressed the press and said: “I want to appeal to all our youths to always refrain from taking the law into their hands by taking on innocent people each time this kind of evil takes place. Evil cannot set the pace on how we should leave with one another. I thank them for heeding to this advice.”
