Strange: Parents Of UI Students Demand Increase In Accommodation Fees

While students of the University of Ibadan continue to express their disagreement over the ban on cooking in hostels, their parents have, however, called on the management of the university to increase hostel fee, saying that the present fee of N14,000 is too cheap. They added that such increase should be minimal.
The parents made this position known during the Parents’ Forum organised by the university on Wednesday to discuss with parents, sponsors and guardians on the challenges facing the institution. The meeting, which took place at the Trenchard Hall in the university, was well attended and a unanimous decision was reached that in order to tackle the deplorable condition in the hostels, there was the need to increase accommodation fee.
According to the parents, “the hostel fee of N14,000 is grossly cheap and unrealistic.”
They noted that the Federal Government is not providing any subvention for accommodation. Also, the Vice-Chancellor, of the institution, Professor Isaac Adewole, and other principal officers of the university were present at the meeting.
Meanwhile, in his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Akinola Alada, presented the cost structure of students’ accommodation in which he informed the parents that a large chunk of the university’s fund is spent on hostels with over N400million expended in the last three years.
