Psy’s long-awaited follow-up to Gangnam Style has finally made its online debut after its initial early appearance was blocked by the star’s record company.
Gentleman – Psy’s second international single – was due for release across the globe at midnight on Friday April 12.
But with fans in Australia and New Zealand hearing the song first due to time differences, the track almost inevitably began appearing on YouTube before the rest of the world had had a chance to get hold of it.
Psy’s record company Universal quickly clamped down on the various streams – preventing anyone else from hearing the song until the magic hour had passed elsewhere.
Meanwhile, reaction to the track has been mixed – with fans quickly taking to Twitter to make their views known.
‘Well done Psy, I have your new song in my head,’ tweeted one, while another added: ‘Holy smokes. Psy’s Gentleman is seriously awesome. Like..whoa.’
Others weren’t quite so keen. ”Will it live up to his Gangnam Style success? Quite simply, no.’ tweeted one person, while another concluded: No gangnam style is it!’
The rapper recently promised that Gentleman would be ‘extremely fun’ – and also promised a new dance routine to rival that of Gangnam Style.
‘I can’t tell you about the dance but all Koreans know this dance,’ he added, ‘but those in other countries haven’t seen it.’
Psy is set to perform the track in public for the first time at Seoul’s World Cup Stadium over the weekend.
The show will be transmitted live on Youtube, kicking off at around 11.30am BST on Saturday.
Gangnam Style topped the charts in the UK in September 2012, going on to pass the 1m sales mark in this country in February.
The video for the song – in which Psy demonstrates the now infamous accompanying dance routine – has also become the most watched clip of all time on YouTube, with over 1.5bn views.
