A mystery truck conveying about 20 gunmen which beat check-points yesterday killed a family of six in a Kaduna community. The bandits were said to have operated like commandos.
An eyewitness who doesn’t want to be named, said: “We saw a truck parked in the day time, but about 12 midnight, when we had gone to sleep, we began to hear gunshots. I rushed my wife and daughter to a safer place. When we came back, all the people in one house were burnt to death right in the house.
We didn’t know what happened, but after the incident, we discovered that the trailer was nowhere to be found. In spite of military check-points in the area, the gunmen shot sporadically into the air for over 30 minutes, but no securityman went to the area to save the people until after the gunmen had left.” Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, who spoke through his media spokesman, Reuben Buhari, said, “the state government, while totally condemning the killing as barbaric, sympathized with the bereaved, His Highness, the Agwam Bajju, Mallam Nuhu Bature, the local government council and the entire people of the state.”
The incident which occurred early yesterday, took place in Madauchi community, Zango Kataf Local Government Area in the house of one Mr. Yakubu Kayit. The attackers had surrounded the house and set it ablaze while the occupants were asleep. However, the spokesman of the state police command, DSP Aminu Lawan, said investigation has commenced. The latest incident came barely a month after suspected armed robbers attacked Dogo Dawa community of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of the state, killing over 20 villagers, injuring several others. Chairman, Zango Kataf Local Government, Mr. Gambo Dominic Yahaya, who confirmed the attack in a text message, said: “An attack took place at Madauchi, near Zonkwa town early this morning (yesterday).
Six people were shot and killed by gunmen. “A building was set ablaze and six members of one family were burnt beyond recognition. Only one of the dead bodies was brought out of the building.” According to the council boss, the gunmen disappeared immediately after the attack.Yakowa further said, “More saddening was the fact that this incident occurred when more concerted effort by this government, through the Peace and Reconciliation Committee, is being made to entrench lasting and sustainable peace in Kaduna State.
“But even in the face of such unwarranted and deliberate attempt to incite and create chaos, the state government will not be deterred in its quest of ensuring a secured and united Kaduna State. “I urge us all to take comfort and strength from the fact that this loss is shared by many who truly care for them and may God that gives us the courage to face our tomorrow with the hope that peace will find a permanent abode within our state soonest.”
Meanwhile, youths in the area have called for the withdrawal of soldiers from the area because, “if the military and securitymen cannot protect the people, they have no business staying here. They should go. We will protect ourselves.”
