Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists shot dead the Acting Caretaker Chairman and Secretary of Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State, Alhaji Kachallah Umara.
It would be recalled that Governor Kashim Shettima had last week dissolved all the Caretaker Chairmen of the 27 council areas following the expiration of their six months tenure, in which the deceased was acting as the chairman of Dikwa before his death.
The incident took place at Gomari Airport at about 7pm on Thursday. Gomari is one of the peaceful wards in Jere and Maiduguri metropolis. No killing has been witnessed in the area in the past four months.
The last time a similar incident happened was in December last year when some suspected terrorists slaughtered five people, including a village head and two policemen and three civilians in their residents.
The secretary, it was learnt was ambushed by the terrorists after performing his 7.00 p.m. prayer at a mosque close to his family house along the Gomari Bustop Road.
A reliable source and resident of Gomari said: “The gunmen numbering about four came in an unmarked Golf Volkswagen saloon car, and when the deceased was about entering his house from the mosque, they opened fire on him and left.
When contacted, the Police Commissioner in the state, Mr. Yuguda Abdullahi, told newsmen on phone that he was not in Maiduguri to comment on the incident, even as the spokesman of the Command, DSP Gideon Jubrin’s cell phones were all switched off as at the time of going to press.
