President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed concerns over the continued violence in most parts of the North.
The President, who expressed voiced his worries while delivering the opening remark at the ongoing meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), debunked speculations that all the killings are carried out by members of the outlawed Boko Haram sect.
He cited the recent massacre in Zamfara State as example saying security reports at his disposal indicated that the violence was purely ethnic cleansing and wondered why ethnic groups that had co-existed in peace for several decades resorted to killing themselves.
Information Nigeria reports that gunmen stormed four villages in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State in the early hours of Tuesday and killed scores of including a village head.
Mr Jonathan asked the governors present at the meeting to take up the security challenges and reverse the ugly trend.
The President also expressed optimism that despite the challenges posed by corruption, Nigeria would be a better place to live in, in the next five years.
