Brazil Nightclub Tragedy: Lessons For Nigeria

On Sunday, January 27, a fire swept through the packed, popular Kiss Nightclub in Santa Maria, Southern Brazil, killing over 230 people - enough to fill a large airliner. Brazilian authorities have said that of the 143 people still hospitalized  more than 70 are in a critical condition

The Kiss Nightclub is popular with young people in Santa Maria, which is home to a number of universities and colleges, including the Federal University of Santa Maria. At least 80 of those killed were students from that University, Brazilian authorities disclosed.
Brazilian Police investigating the blaze have said that it likely started when a country music band performing at the Kiss Nightclub lit a flare which ignited flammable soundproofing foam on the ceiling. That initial error was compounded by the over-capacity crowd, near-total lack of emergency infrastructure such as fire alarms or sprinkler systems, the police further revealed and noted that the club also had only one working door and a faulty fire extinguisher.
Amid the shock of what has become the world’s deadliest nightclub fire in a decade, stricter safety measures in Brazil seem on the horizon. In Brasilia, the nation’s capital, lawmakers in the Lower House are working on a proposal that would require federal safety minimum standards across Brazil. States are expected to domesticate such laws when they come on stream. Significantly, the tragedy raises questions about the reliability of safety regulations in a nation set to host the World Cup and Olympic Games.
We believe that the Brazilian nightclub fire tragedy contains several important lessons for Nigeria and our laid-back approach to regulation of critical institutions and public spaces. In Nigeria currently, the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Asaba, Enugu and a few other towns represent active centres of night life. The tragic Brazil fire quickly puts these centres of vibrant night life on the spot.
Documents obtained by The Associated Press in the aftermath of the blaze, examining fire safety plan permits issued to the club, showed that the single exit, the foam insulation and other contributors to the tragedy didn’t violate existing laws in that city. This is strange. Our town/city councils, local regulators and parliament must update subsisting laws to decisively preempt such a tragedy in Nigeria.
Because of the apparent cheapness of life in the country, we can state that many of the nightclubs that currently operate in Nigeria may not have the minimum safety infrastructure to guarantee quick evacuation in case of fire and other emergencies.
It must not take a Brazil-type tragedy to wake us up to that possibility.
Many nightclubs currently operating are actually not designed for the purpose. Many are converted residential structures dressed up as grade-A night clubs as the regulators look the other way. Many of the entertainment centres may potentially be death traps. Town planning authorities, the national and state parliaments, law enforcement agencies, Non-governmental Organisations and other concerned groups must close ranks and insist that the rational course be followed.
In Abuja, many existing nightclubs were not originally built for the purpose. Yet their high-decibel nightly shindigs go on night after night.
While we are not against the existence of nightclubs or night-clubbing, we insist that such public spaces must be made safe for the public. While existing regulations should be updated, the police should ensure that all nightclubs, bars and other entertainment venues comply. Single exits do not serve public safety interest best. Overcrowding, appropriate fire control and all irregularities in night-club construction must be addressed.

The Best Team, Not Players Will Win Sunday’s Clash – Moses, Enyeama

Nigeria’s two-goal hero in the match that guaranteed the Super Eagles a berth in the quarter finals, Victor Moses and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, have assured Nigerians that ‘stars don’t win matches’ as they gear up to face Cote d’Ivoire in their Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match.
Moses said both Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire parade good players and only after 90 minutes of action would determine a winner.
“Cote d’Ivoire no doubt has good players in their team but we are equally here with good players in our team, so we are concentrating on the match at the moment.
“We will go there with full force, and I think we will cause upset, so we will meet on the pitch on Sunday. We are doing well progressively as a team”, said Moses.
On his part, Eagles safe hands, Vincent Enyeama said though the Ivorians parade a galaxy of stars, the team that will play the best game on Sunday will win, as stars don’t win matches.
“Cote d’Ivoire is the favourite team in this championship. You can’t take it away from them that they are a good team. It is star-studded team, half of them are playing in the English Premier League and the other half are playing in big teams across Europe, so they are favourites.
“But you should understand that stars don’t play football, teams do”, Enyeama stressed.

For Men: Frequent Consumption Of Fried Food May Increase The Risk Of Prostate Cancer

Research has revealed that eating deep-fried foods, such as French fries and fried chicken on a regular basis may lead to an increased risk of prostate cancer.
While previous research suggested that eating foods prepared with high-heat cooking methods, such as grilled meat, may increase the risk of prostate cancer, this is the first study to look at how deep-fried foods may affect that risk, the study authors said. Researchers examined data from about 1,500 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 1,500 men who did not have the disease. The men, who ranged from 35 to 74 years old, provided details about their eating habits.
It was found that men who said they ate French fries, fried chicken, fried fish and/or doughnuts at least once a week were 30 per cent to 37 per cent more likely to develop prostate cancer than those who ate such foods less than once a month. Men who ate these foods at least once a week also had a slightly greater risk of more aggressive prostate cancer, according to the study, which found an association between deep-fried foods and prostate cancer risk, but didn’t prove cause-and-effect. The study was published online recently in the journal, The Prostate.
The study was supported by the U.S. National Cancer Institute and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, in Seattle. According to the study’s corresponding author, Janet Stanford, who is also co-director of Hutchinson’s prostate cancer research programme, “The link between prostate cancer and select deep-fried foods appeared to be limited to the highest level of consumption, defined in our study as more than once a week, which suggests that regular consumption of deep-fried foods confers particular risk for developing prostate cancer.”
Speaking in a news release, she added that this increased prostate cancer risk may be due to the fact that when oil is heated to temperatures used for deep frying, potentially cancer-causing compounds can form in the fried food, she said. The more the oil is re-used and the longer the frying time, the greater the amounts of these toxic compounds, Stanford said.

Oops!!! Odemwingie On National TV.

West Brom have denied giving Peter Odemwingie permission to talk with QPR despite him arriving at Loftus Road in an apparent bid to force a move. The striker, 31, was the target of an unsuccessful R's bid of about £3m last week and has put in a transfer request.
"Albion would also like to make clear that Peter has not been given permission to speak to QPR," read an Albion statement. "Talks [between QPR and WBA on a fee] have so far proven fruitless." QPR have denied that Odemwingie was admitted to club premises. Odemwingie's Premier League prowess The former Lille striker has scored 30 times in 80 Premier League appearances, including a hat-trick against Albion's rivals Wolves

Odemwingie had earlier appeared optimistic that a deal could be reached. "I hope they will be happy with what they get and, of course, they want to get in players themselves. I just hope that everything will be sorted out in the next few hours," Odemwingie told Sky Sports News on his arrival in West London. He has also been quoted as saying that he had reached an informal agreement with Albion's technical director Dan Ashworth on his departure, only to find that the situation had changed when he was en route to London. "I am disappointed this is all happening.
I met with Dan Ashworth this morning and we shook hands that I could leave with his blessing if the £3.5m fee was met," the striker was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror. "Now, as I am on my way, I find that there are more complications. It is frustrating to say the least. But I am hopeful a solution can be found." QPR manager Harry Redknapp confirmed earlier in the day that Odemwingie was still a player he would like to bring into his squad. "He's got pace, I really like him and I think he could help us," he told the the club's official weekly phone-in show 'London Call-In'.
"Whether we can get him, I'm not sure." West Brom had described Odemwingie's transfer request club as "disappointing" earlier in the week. "As we have repeatedly stated, we have no need or desire to sell our core players," said Baggies technical director Richard Garlick at the time. "Since we turned down Peter's transfer request, he has made his position clear in a statement to the media and via his personal Twitter account. This matter will be dealt with internally." Odemwingie, a £2.5m signing from Lokomotiv Moscow in 2010, tweeted on Sunday night: "Looked through my tweets. Deleted some.
Was too much. Only excuses - home alone, dark, son and wife in hospital, frustrated." His deleted tweets included: "Last season January window is when I should have handed in transfer request. Was one foot in Rubin Kazan - not for sale. Fulham. Not for sale. Newcastle. Not for sale. Wigan. Not for sale." Last week he had said he was "deeply hurt" and "offended" by what he regarded as a lack of "common respect" from the West Brom management.
