Nigeria will start exporting cars soon —Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday expressed the belief that with the measures put in place by his administration, especially the new National Automotive Industry Policy; the country would soon be exporting cars to other countries.

Jonathan spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while granting audience to a delegation of the business community from Anambra State led by Governor Peter Obi.

In responding to an address by the delegation, the President said, “I will refer all the issues you raised to the various departments of government. We are totally committed to creating jobs. Nigeria is a country with huge population of youths. If jobs are not created, there will be crisis. The housing, agriculture and power sectors are also receiving attention.

“In the next few years, Nigeria will begin to export cars to other countries. We are encouraging the government to support local manufacturers.”

Jonathan promised that the industrialists’ basic needs such as roads, power and port facilities would be addressed appropriately.

He said if Nigeria must become great as expected by all, the Federal Government must industrialise the nation.

To this end, he said his administration would continue to encourage industrialists in the country.

“If any country will be great, we must industrialise. If Nigeria must be a great country, we must industrialise. To this end, we will continue to encourage industrialists in Anambra,” the President added.

He said his government was also devoting attention and resources to the power sector because of its critical role in industrialisation.

Vice-President Namadi Sambo told the delegation that Jonathan had recently approved $3.7bn to improve power transmission across the country.

Obi had earlier told the President that the enterprising and preserving nature of Anambra people made them well-positioned to assist Jonathan to achieve his administration’s transformation agenda.

While declaring the support of the people of the state for Jonathan, Obi said, “You have excess credit in your political account that these people (members of the delegation) are ready to pay you when you need it.”

The governor said he led the delegation to express their support for the President and bring to his attention some of the industrialists’ collective, which if addressed, would help in anchoring the growth and development of industry in the state.

Some of the needs, according to him, are the completion of the 330/132/33KV power substation at Nnewi; provision of uninterrupted power supply in the Onitsha Harbour Industrial Area and Ozubulu Industrial Hub; completion of the Nnamdi Azikwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi; and the inclusion of Anambra State in the rail master plan.

Obi also made a case for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of federal roads within the state such as the Oba-Nnewi-Okigwe Section 1, Nnewi-Okija, start of Onitsha Second Niger Bridge, completion of the Onitsha-Enugu dual carriageway and completion of the Umueze-Anam Kogi road.

The governor also thanked the President for the inclusion of Nnewi in the National Automotive Industry Policy of the Federal Government.

This, he said, would attract many ancillary industries, especially with the coming on stream of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant, adding that the local content in vehicle manufacturing in no time would increase from 40 per cent to 60 per cent.

Liverpool ready to splash £7m on Moses

Liverpool are keen on securing a permanent deal for Chelsea winger Victor Moses, reports The Metro.

The Reds took the 22-year-old on loan from the Blues in the past transfer window and, despite the Nigerian star in-and-out of the team at Anfield, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to keep him for the long term.

It’s thought the Merseyside outfit will have to pay their Premier League rivals £7m for his long term services.

Moses however, will be looking for more opportunities at the Anfield outfit before he decides to leave Chelsea for good.

The winger struggled for opportunities at Stamford Bridge and with Jose Mourinho in charge at Chelsea, it’s unlikely he will get many opportunities in the future.

And with Liverpool ready to keep him at the club, Moses may now see his long term future on Merseyside, if he is given more opportunities to shine.

Liverpool currently sit above Moses’ parent club in the table as both clubs go in search of glory this season.

Moses hope he can perform better if given more opportunities at Anfield, and he expresses his delight at playing under Rogers who has a great deal of his respect and admiration.

“He’s a great manager to play under,” Moses told reporters. “He’s very clear with the players. He knows what he wants us to do.

“There’s a winning mentality, but he also realises that if we are enjoying ourselves, we’re likely to do better. I’ve known him since I was 16 – when I was at Palace and he was at Chelsea.

“He really wanted me to go there. I said no a few times. I thought Palace was the best place for me at that time. But he never forgot about me.

“I was delighted when he came in for me again. There were a few clubs interesting in taking me, but when I heard about Liverpool, my decision was made straightaway.”

ASUU strike, a rebellion — Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan says the strike embarked upon by the  Academic Staff Union of Universities since July 1, 2013 over the non-implementation of 2009 agreement with the Federal Government is no longer a trade dispute but a subversive action.
Jonathan said this at the Peoples Democratic Party state caucus meeting at the Government House, Yenagoa. The meeting, presided over by the party chairman in the state, Col. Samuel Inokoba (retd), started late on Friday and ended on Saturday.
The President was reacting to a plea by a former governor of the state, Mr. Diepreye Alamieyesigha, on the December 4 deadline given to ASUU to call off its strike or be sacked.
Alamieyesigha noted that the same date was fixed for the burial of late Prof. Festus Iyayi, who died in a road accident in Kogi State on November 12, en route Kano for the national executive council.
The NEC meeting was meant to deliberate on the latest government offer after meeting with Jonathan on November 4 to the early hours of November 5.
The  former governor, who is also the Chairman Elders Advisory Forum in the state, urged the President to reconsider the date in order not to be seen as insensitive.
President Jonathan said despite holding the longest meeting in his political career with all the highest officers in his administration present including the Vice-President, Minister of Finance, Minister of Labour, Minister of Justice, the Secretary to the Government and the delegation from the Nigeria Labour Congress,  ASUU did not deem it fit to reconsider its stance.
Jonathan said, “What ASUU is doing is no longer trade union. I have intervened in other labour issues before now, once I invite them, they respond and after the meeting they take decision and call off the strike.
“At times, we don’t even give them a long notice unlike in the case of ASUU that was given four days notice before the meeting. As you are meeting to resolve trade disputes, you expect the trade unions to get their officials ready. What was expected having met with the highest authorities in the land for long hours, was for ASUU to immediately issue a statement within 12 or latest 24 hours to state their position whether they were accepting government’s offer or not. And if they are not accepting, they state the reason for that.
“But despite the fact that I had the longest meeting with ASUU in my political history, we did not start that meeting until around 2 pm and the meeting ended the next day in the early hours of the morning. As far as the government of Nigeria was concerned, all the critical people that should be in a meeting were there, so what else do they want?
He added, “After that, they didn’t meet until one week, despite the fact that you met with the highest authority. It was unfortunate one of them, Prof. Iyayi died.
“The way ASUU has conducted the matter shows they are extreme and when Iyayi died, they now said the strike was now indefinite, our children have been at home for over five months.
“We didn’t give them ultimatum; it was the Committee of Vice Chancellors that took that decision. The supervising minister of education only passed on the decision. What ASUU is doing is no longer trade dispute but subversive action. But like you rightly noted so that we will not be perceived to be insensitive, we will consult on the deadline.”
The Federal Government had on Thursday given ASUU one week ultimatum to call off strike or consider themselves sacked.
Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has dared  the Federal Government to reopen the universities.
The ASUU chairman at the Obafemi  Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Adegbola  Akinola, said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Friday.
The ASUU chairman said members of the union were unfazed  by the deployment of troops to varsities.
The don said he was not sure that the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, had the consent of President Goodluck Jonathan before issuing the ultimatum.
He stated that the union did not shut the universities but just withdrew services of its members to press home their demands that government should take steps to reverse the decay in the public universities.

Being Sexy Not About Big Backside — Mercy Johnson

Background
I am Mercy Johnson, an actress. I was born 29 years ago and I am the fourth child in a family of seven. My father is an ex-military officer and I left my mother at the age of two to live with him. Due to the nature of his job, he was constantly transferred from one station to another. I am proud of him because he taught me all I needed to know from childhood to adulthood.
Movie industry
I have grown with time and there have been good and bad times. There have been rumours and scandals. Sometimes, when I cry in movies, it wasn’t the script that made me cry. Rather, I reflect on my humble beginning and the height I’ve attained now. This makes me cry.
Journey into acting
After my secondary school education, I approached a friend for assistance to feature in a movie. He took me to the National Theatre, Lagos, but a role did not come until a year later. My first lead role was in a film titled, ‘The Maid.’ It was quite challenging to interprete because it was my first movie. When I saw the veterans on set, I fidgeted.
A star actress
Life is in phases and I cannot say I have reached the peak of my profession. I have not even won an Oscar yet! There is always a higher mountain to climb, a new vision to fulfill and I am at that point. I want to achieve new and greater dreams.
Fulfillment
The greatest fulfillment is the ability to influence people positively through my acting.
Challenges
Life is not a bed of roses; it comes with challenges which make me stronger and who I am.
Nollywood: Then and now
We have achieved feats which the old Nollywood did not achieve. It is all about progression and I am sure that in the future, Nollywood will achieve a greater feat than it is doing currently.

Lagos Community Where Men Don’t Use Condoms

Following his pleasant discovery earlier in the day, Hueze Huesu, in his 50s, couldn’t wait to get home later that night. He felt like a school boy preparing for a first date.
He was excited about exploring the world of sex with a ‘rubber.’ “Nobody had told me about condoms until I heard from some people that it prevents pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases,” he said.
However, his excitement was deflated when he tried to explore his discovery with one of his wives that night. He said, “For the first time, I tried to use it when I wanted to sleep with my wife but she bluntly refused. She said she was not a prostitute and queried why I wanted to use a condom when we have been married for years and never used one.”
Since then, Huese, who has 10 children, has never tried to use a condom with any of his two wives. “I have never believed in the use of condoms anyway. This has not stopped me from having sex regularly. The woman knows the sign when the man is about to ejaculate or reach orgasm. So she has already even enjoyed it more than the man before he withdraws,” noted Huese animatedly.
Like Huese, many Egun people in Makoko, as well as Oko-Agbon and Ago-Egun communities in Yaba Local Council Development Area, Lagos, do not like using condoms due to their long held traditional belief in the old practice of coitus interruptus, also known as the withdrawal or pull-out method during sexual intercourse.

Women Who Are More Powerful Than Jonathan

Since inception, President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration has been accused of impunity, usually caused by decisions and actions of the President, including those of his ministers and close associates.
Most of the glaring cases of abuse of power including reckless spending of taxpayers’ money have been carried out by the women in Jonathan’s cabinet. These women have proven to be more powerful than the number one citizen of Nigeria because despite public outcries that greet some of their decisions, they go scot-free.
Those who fall in this seemingly untouchable category are the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan; the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke; the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh; and the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah.
These powerful women have some things in common. They are all from the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones. Four of them had their higher education in the United States and two of them are daughters of traditional rulers. Needless to say they occupy some of the most strategic and ‘lucrative’ positions in the Federal Government.
PATIENCE JONATHAN
In Nigeria’s history, Patience Jonathan is believed to be the most powerful First Lady in terms of the amount of influence she has over her husband and his cabinet.
Mrs. Jonathan first gave a glimpse into the enormous power she wields in 2011 when she traversed the country, campaigning for her husband in a way that irked many Nigerians.
Several calls by individuals and groups to the President to restrain his wife yielded no result.
Also, in June this year, in apparent violation of the electoral act, Mrs. Jonathan reportedly started campaigning for her husband ahead of the 2015 elections.
Another show of impunity by the President’s wife is the way she cripples any town or city she visits with her long motorcade, including bulletproof limousines and scores of armed policemen.
She grounded Lagos in 2012 when she visited to say “thank you” to some women groups for their support in electing her husband.

Policeman Brutalises Eight-year-Old Daughter Over Witchcraft

A police sergeant from Ibiaku community, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Ita Ayamba, has allegedly brutalised and abandoned his eight-year-old daughter, Goodness Ayamba over her refusal to confess to witchcraft.
Ita was said to have paraded the little girl along the village streets naked, declaring that Goodness was responsible for his retrogression in the Police Force.
A source and relative of Ita, told our correspondent in Eket on Saturday, on the condition of anonymity,
that the police sergeant tortured his daughter for several hours in an attempt to extract a confession of being a witch from her.
He said, “When he discovered that Goodness had passed out, Ita abandoned her, having hit her chest with the butt of his AK 47 Rifle.
“None of us could go close to Ita to rescue Goodness as he had threatened to shoot anyone that dared.
“I don’t see how a child of that age could become a clog in the wheel of her father’s progress in the Police Force. We need to tell each other the truth. Progress in one’s career depends on the efforts one has made academically.”
It was gathered that Ita had divorced Goodness’ mother some years back. He was said to have remarried almost immediately, leaving three children including Goodness with their grandmother.
A resident of the area, Okon Ekong, said that on July 28, 2013 when the children were on holiday, Ita had requested custody of them. He was said to be at his new station in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at the time.
Ita’s former wife, Mrs. Anietie Ayamba, allegedly heeded his request and took the children to him. Ekong said that the children’s stepmother made life miserable for them.
He said, “It was during their stay in Port Hracourt, that their stepmother took the children to a Pentecostal church. Goodness was accused of witchcraft at the church. Her stepmother was told that Goodness was the person responsible for their father’s non-rising profile in the force.

Shocking: Enugu Prison Cells Rented At N10,000 — N200,000, Inmates Pay N2,000 for Court Appearance

Revelations that have startled as many as have heard them have been made by a freed inmate about how the Enugu Maximum Prison authorities allegedly force prisoners to pay N2,000 fee for each of them to be transported from the prison to court to attend to their various matters.
The prisoner who was recently set free also claimed that inmates paid between N100 to N150 for a bucket of water.
The Deputy Comptroller in charge of the prison, Mustapha Attah however dismissed the allegations as an attempt by mischief-makers who, he said, were out to undermine his outstanding contributions to the growth and effective control of the prison.
In a chat, the former inmate who would not want his name in print said: “You must pay before you are taken to court; if you don’t pay nobody takes you to court and that is why many prisoners don’t come to court; they say the money is for the Black Maria, and it’s N2,000 each.”
The source who said he didn’t have the money to pay the day he was granted bail narrated how he begged and assured that warders that he would collect money from his people in the court premises before he was taken to court.
He was granted bail in court and, therefore, he refused to pay the fee. But by the time he returned to the prison, waiting for the perfection of his bail, he was locked up in what he called the back cell or punishment cell for three days.
He said he was later transferred to Oji-River Prison for more punishment but was saved by the quick intervention of his lawyer who facilitated his release.
Other alleged irregularities from the Enugu Prison include the practice of making prison inmates pay rent for cell space they occupy while in detention.
According to the source, the inmates pay N10,000, N25,000 up to N200,000 depending on the quality of the cell.

After More Than One Year in Hiding in Canada, Two Nigerian Students Finally Deported

Two Nigerian students living in Regina, Canada who have been in trouble with immigration authorities left Saskatchewan Friday.
Victoria Ordu and Favour Amadi, who were under a deportation order, took refuge in four different city churches after learning they would be forced to leave the country.
The University of Regina students have been in hiding for more than a year, getting by with the help of friends.
“I’ve spent three years of my life studying here, and to go back without anything to show for it, is painful, sad,” said Ordu.
Amadi was feeling the same way.
“And to go back home without a single degree…is actually shameful and disappointing for both us and our parents,” she said.
University of Regina President, Vianne Timmons, was at the airport to say good-bye.
“They’re worried and they’re scared, and they’re young girls, young women,” said Timmons. “And they’re frightened. And they also seem calmed in that they had made the decision”
Timmons said the two left voluntarily in the hope that doing so would allow them to return to Canada later. The University is vowing to help the students come back.
“I know they plan on applying for reinstatement as soon as they possibly can, and they’ll have my full support on that,” said Timmons.

Embattled Oduah Seeks Audience With Jonathan

The embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, has commenced last- ditch efforts to save her job.
The PUNCH learnt on Sunday that she had used the last few days seeking private audience with President Goodluck Jonathan.
On Friday for instance, she was sighted at the Presidential Villa in Abuja as calls by groups for her removal over the purchase of two BMW bulletproof cars for her by the Nigerian Civil Aviation authority heightened.
The NCAA spent a whopping $1.6m(N225m) on the two cars which market value is N36m each.
A very reliable Presidency source, who disclosed Oduah’s visit to the Villa, said she “wanted to explain herself to the President, who like every Nigerian, was embarrassed by the media reports and the evidence of the purchase of the two cars at an outrageous sum of N225m.”
The source said, “She was here (Villa) on Friday but like you know, Mr. President was busy throughout the weekend.”
When asked if Oduah eventually saw Jonathan, he replied, “I cannot tell for sure if the minister who looked worried saw him or not.”
However, the source dismissed speculations that Oduah, who is to appear before the Senate this week over the crisis facing the Aviation industry, was at the Villa to beg the President to prevent possible sanctions.
He stated that should she decide to beg, she would most likely reach out to highly placed Nigerians who have the ears of the President.

Plumber Held Over Ingestion Of 57 Wraps of Cocaine

A plumber, Ogu Okechukwu, has been apprehended by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, for the importation of 945grammes of cocaine.
In a statement by the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mitchell Ofoyeju, on Thursday, Okechukwu was said to have ingested 57 wraps of cocaine which was detected at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The suspect, who was on his way back from Brazil, was arrested during the inward screening of passengers on an Etihad flight from Abu Dhabi.
The NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar, said the cocaine wraps were packed into male condoms.
He said, “Okechukwu excreted 57 wraps of powdery cocaine packed inside male condoms and sealed with cello-tape.
“It is a dangerous practice because many drug traffickers have died as a result of leakage in such wraps of narcotics.”
The suspect in his confessional statement claimed he was lured into drug trafficking because of his inability to pay his rent of N150,000.
Okechukwu said, “I am a plumber. I am married with two children and my wife just delivered our second baby. I had no money to pay my rent of N150,000.
“I was introduced to drug trafficking in my search for funds; I was to get N300,000 to bring the drug from Brazil. My travel expenses were sponsored.
“While in Brazil, I was given 100 wraps of drugs to swallow but I could only take 57 because it was my first time and it was not easy to ingest. I am unhappy that I involved myself in this.”

Video: Shekau; The Controversial BOko Haram Leader Dead?

Is he dead? Is he alive? Who? Well i’m talking of nigeria’s enemy number one- the boko haram leader ibrahim shekau.
Not too long ago, security agencies said he may have died as a result of wounds he sustained during a shoot-out with security agents sometime in july.
He was almost captured, but his aides managed to evacuate him across the border to cameroun.
He was in hospital-this picture yesterday testifies to that, and he actually appeared lifeless here.
As the official claims have it, shekau never made it, but since there was no evidence to prove this, perhaps until this picture now, security agents have continued to maintain the cautious approach that the boko haram leader may have died.
However, about two weeks ago, a video surfaced, allegedly showing shekau who claimed he was not dead, and as usual promised more attacks while claiming responsibility for all the attacks, mostly on innocent people, including students. But security agencies have now subjected the video to proper scrutiny and the report from the sss yesterday, suggests that the video may just have been mere manipulations.
