A father of a 7-year-old girl who was gang raped, came out defending the attackers, after he was unable to come to terms of what really happened to his little child.
The father said Thursday that the three men tried to get his daughter out from an apartment where she was attacked. He added that they were not able to help her because they were then held at gunpoint.
The father was not identified so as not to identify his daughter who is a victim of a sexual crime.
Police say the girl was prostituted by her 15-year-old sister, who watched as she was raped by seven men and boys at a party March 28.
The father's comments came after a 20 year old man, Gregory Leary was arrested and held on $500,000 bail. He is one of the attackers that the father is defending.
The lawyer for one of the five suspects accused of gang raping the 7-year-old New Jersey girl who prosecutors say was sold for sex by her stepsister suggested Thursday in court that the child had been pressured into making up the story.
"She was not attacked, she was not raped," said Robin Lord, attorney for suspect Gregory Leary. "I am 100 percent sure that the 7-year-old was not sexually assaulted. The accusations are not supported by forensic evidence."
Leary, accused of involvement in the rape and endangering the welfare of a child, was ordered held on bail of $500,000. He is also accused of statutory rape. Trenton police say he also had sex with the 15-year-old half-sister of the girl.
"My son did not rape anyone," said Leary's mother, Robin David, outside the courthouse. "My son is a loving child and could never hurt anyone. I feel so bad for my son and anyone else who is involved in this."
Police have said that the sister was paid for sex at a party in an empty apartment, and then gave the younger girl money and encouraged the girl to let him the men touch her. Police say they then proceeded to rape the girl. The sister was also arrested.
The child was treated at a hospital, and police say there is DNA evidence of the crime.
In all, five men and boys have been charged with raping the 7 year old girl. In addition to Leary, who is 19 years old, Tiemporeja Lewis and three children 13, 14 and 17, were also arrested.
"These kids are victims of their own hormones," said an attorney. Police have said they expect more arrests.
